Hakuna Matata & DOB Project

Project period: 1st January 2023 – 31st December 2024
Focus: Environmental and Agroforestry
Region: Kilimanjaro and Morogoro
Beneficiaries: 224 vanilla farmers

16,800 trees planted across 221.5 acres of farmland, contributing to restoring biodiversity, conserving the soil and sequestering carbon.
Nei is convinced that agroforestry can support environmental sustainability and empower communities. Civil society organisation Hakuna Matata shares this vision. By joining forces, the teams distributed and planted native tree and fruit seedlings on the land cultivated by 224 partner vanilla farmer outgrowers across Kilimanjaro and Morogoro.

he teams also developed the nei Agroforestry Manual, which provides farmers with practical guidance on how to implement and monitor sustainable agroforestry practices – supporting a long-term approach.

By integrating agroforestry into vanilla farming, the project contributes to climate adaptation, while supporting farmers in diversifying their agricultural systems, improving productivity and income potential.

“We are very grateful to Hakuna Matata for their support during this initiative. Their contribution reflects a shared vision of advancing environmental stewardship and fostering sustainable livelihoods within the vanilla value chain.”
